Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

The more treatment options are available

The better heart damage can be managed

The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

Lethargy or decreased activity

Fainting or collapse

Irregular heartbeat

Difficulty breathing

Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

4th of July Pet Anxiety: What Every Pet Owner Should Know
For many families, the Fourth of July is one of the most anticipated holidays of the summer. Backyard barbecues, time with friends, and fireworks displays are all part of the celebration. For many pets, however, the holiday feels very different. The loud booms, flashing lights, and unexpected sounds associated with fireworks can create significant anxiety for dogs and cats. In fact, the days surrounding the Fourth of July are some of the busiest of the year for veterinary emergency hospitals and animal shelters due to lost pets and anxiety-related incidents. The good news is that a little preparation can go a long way. Understanding why pets react to fireworks and knowing how to support them can help make the holiday safer and less stressful for everyone.
Why Fireworks Cause Anxiety in Pets
Pets experience the world differently than we do. Their hearing is far more sensitive, allowing them to detect sounds at frequencies and distances humans cannot. When fireworks explode, pets often cannot identify where the noise is coming from or whether it poses a threat. The combination of loud sounds, vibrations, flashing lights, and unpredictable timing can trigger a natural fear response. Some pets may pace, pant, tremble, hide, or vocalize. Others may become destructive or attempt to escape. Even pets that have never shown signs of anxiety before can react strongly to fireworks.Because every pet responds differently, it is important to recognize changes in behavior and provide support before anxiety escalates.
Creating a Safe Space Before the Fireworks Begin
One of the most effective ways to help your pet is to create a calm environment before celebrations start.Bringing pets indoors early in the day can help prevent accidental escapes and allows them to settle into a familiar environment before fireworks begin. Many pets feel more secure in a quiet room away from windows and exterior doors.Comfort items can also make a difference. Favorite blankets, beds, toys, and familiar scents help create a sense of normalcy during stressful situations. Some pets may choose to rest in a crate if they already view it as a safe place. Background noise, such as a television, fan, or calming music, can help mask some of the sounds coming from outside and reduce the intensity of the experience.
The Importance of Maintaining Your Routine
Pets thrive on predictability. During holiday celebrations, sticking to your normal routine as much as possible can provide reassurance.Try to feed meals at their usual times and schedule walks or exercise earlier in the day. Physical activity can help reduce nervous energy and may encourage relaxation later in the evening. While it may be tempting to bring your pet along to a fireworks event or neighborhood gathering, most animals are much safer and more comfortable at home. Crowds, unfamiliar environments, and unexpected noises can increase anxiety and create additional safety concerns.
Protecting Pets from Becoming Lost
Every year, animal shelters report a spike in lost pets around the Fourth of July.A frightened dog or cat can react in ways that seem completely out of character. Pets that have never attempted to escape before may suddenly bolt through an open door or find a way out of a fenced yard when startled. Before the holiday arrives, make sure your pet's identification tags are secure and easy to read. If your pet is microchipped, verify that your contact information is current and accurate. These simple steps can make a significant difference if your pet becomes separated from your family.
When Anxiety Becomes More Than Nervousness
For some pets, fireworks trigger more than temporary stress. If your dog or cat experiences severe anxiety, including panic, excessive vocalization, destructive behavior, or attempts to escape, it may be time to speak with your veterinarian. Behavioral support plans, anxiety management strategies, and veterinarian-approved medications may be appropriate depending on your pet's needs. The best time to have this conversation is before the holiday arrives. Waiting until fireworks begin often limits the options available to help your pet stay comfortable.
Helping Pets Enjoy a Safer Fourth of July
The Fourth of July should be enjoyable for the entire family, including your pets.By planning ahead, creating a calm environment, and understanding how fireworks affect animals, you can significantly reduce stress and help your pet feel more secure throughout the holiday. If you have concerns about your pet's anxiety or would like guidance on preparing for fireworks season, contact your veterinarian before the celebrations begin. A proactive approach can help your pet navigate the holiday with greater comfort and confidence.
Final Thoughts
Fireworks may last only a few hours, but their impact on pets can be significant. Taking steps now to prepare your home and support your pet can help prevent anxiety, reduce the risk of escape, and create a safer holiday experience.A calm pet starts with a prepared pet owner. This Fourth of July, make your pet's comfort and safety part of the celebration.

Learn how to manage 4th of July pet anxiety with veterinarian-approved tips. Discover how to keep dogs and cats calm, safe, and comfortable during fireworks.
