CT Scan In El Paso, TX
Computed Tomography, or CT, is a process of taking X-rays from different angles. Similar to a traditional X-ray, a computed tomography scan obtains images in “slices” that are reconstructed into three-dimensional models. Unlike the two-dimensional picture an X-ray captures, CT scans allow your veterinarian to see the complete bodily structure. This method of diagnostics can help with conditions such as:
1. Dental disease, such as abscess
2. Head trauma
3. Middle and inner ear disorders
4. Tumors
5. Orthopedic conditions, such as hip dysplasia and joint degeneration
6. Brain or spinal conditions
Dental Exams
At East El Paso Animal Hospital, all dental cleanings include a CT scan of your pet’s head as opposed to individual x-rays of each tooth in your pet’s mouth. This saves more time with a single CT scan lasting about 30 seconds. Meanwhile, tooth X-rays can last as long as 30 minutes, and the images captured may not expose all the areas of concern. A CT scan allows veterinarians to see multiple angles above the gum line where abscesses may reside and for a better look at possible tooth decay.
Are There Any Side Effects to a CT Scan?
None. While humans who have many CT scans over the course of their lives may develop an increased risk for radiation-induced cancers, repeat scans for dogs and cats are rare. Additionally, their respective life spans aren’t long enough to be affected in this way.
However, as with any procedure that requires anesthesia, the patient should be monitored for a short period for any ill effects.
